THURSTON COUNTY, WA — A pedestrian and a driver died Thursday morning after a crash involving two cars on Interstate 5 southbound near Chehalis, according to Trooper Robert Reyer with Washington State Patrol.

The accident happened along the exit ramp of I-5 southbound merging to state Route 12 at milepost 88 and was first reported by WSP at 9:37 a.m.

WSP troopers, fire trucks and emergency medics responded to the scene.

An SUV was stopped on the shoulder along the ramp as two of the vehicle’s occupants stood outside the car to check on bicycles. A sedan then drove onto the shoulder, struck the SUV and one of the two occupants standing outside.

The struck passenger and the driver of the causing sedan both died on scene. Three other passengers were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening.

No further information has been reported regarding the cause of the crash.
