PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Six people were hospitalized Monday afternoon after a two-car crash on Pacific Highway East near west Fife, reports FOX 13 Seattle.

The collision took place near 26th Avenue East and was first reported by Tacoma Fire Department shortly after 3:30 p.m.

It was not immediately clear what led up to the accident, but firefighters had to perform a rescue extrication for six occupants trapped in two vehicles. All six victims were transported to nearby hospitals upon their safe removal from the wreckage. No information has been released regarding the severity of their condition.

Photos taken at the scene show severe damage to the passenger side of one vehicle and the front end of another.

The highway was shut down in both directions around the 26th Avenue East intersection during an investigation.
