QUEETS, WA — A 10-year-old girl was killed and a 12-year-old girl seriously injured Monday afternoon after they were struck by an SUV near US Route 101 in Jefferson County, according to KOMO News.

Washington State Patrol said the two girls were standing on the shoulder along northbound US Highway 101 shortly after 1:00 p.m. when the crash occurred.

A 67-year-old woman was suffering a medical emergency and lost consciousness at the wheel, causing her SUV to travel to the right shoulder, ram through an irrigation ditch, and strike the two girls.

Responding troopers and medics discovered the 10-year-old had died at the scene.

The 12-year-old girl was transported by airlift to Tacoma’s Mary Bridge Hospital with serious injuries. Her condition has not been disclosed.
