WHATCOM COUNTY, WA — Multiple vehicles overturned in a chain-reaction crash Thursday afternoon on Interstate 5 near Bellingham’s Sunnyland area, reports Washington State Patrol.

State troopers, Bellingham police, and emergency medics responded to the scene on the southbound lanes of I-5 near North State Street shortly after 2:00 p.m.

An early investigation found a small red passenger car lost control and rolled over as it turned onto the highway from North State Street. A Washington Trails Association (WTA) van, a Chevrolet Equinox, and a semi truck failed to brake in time and were all impacted in a chain-reaction collision.

Photos shared by WSP show two vehicles overturned at different angles near the ramp.

A tweet from Trooper Rocky Oliphant reminding motorists to slow down on wet roadways suggests high speed under rainy weather conditions likely factored into the event.

Authorities have not released further information regarding any significant injuries.
