Covington, Washington (November 7, 2019) – A bicyclist died from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run that occurred on the 18200 block of Southeast Wax Road on Wednesday evening. The victim, identified as Michael Russell, passed away while he was being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Police are currently looking for the vehicle responsible for the collision.

According to the report, the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Investigators determined that Russell was struck from behind, and that the driver continued to drive, dragging the bicycle for about 3/4 of a mile. Police believe that the vehicle may have been in a 2000-2002 Chevy Cavalier, and are asking for anyone with information in the case to give a call to the King County Sheriff’s Office.

About Vehicle Accidents

We offer our sympathies and compassion to the friends and loved ones of the victim. Unfortunately, this is not the only injury or fatality associated with a bicycle accident. Many of the things that apply to motorcycle accidents can also apply to bicycle accidents. Because a bicycle’s overall visibility is less than most other vehicles, drivers of other vehicles tend not to see cyclists in time.  This visibility problem makes bicycle rides at night especially risky. Unfortunately, because of a bicycle’s open nature, the risks of injuries are greater to a person on a bicycle than a person in a car. Injuries to the head are one of the risks, especially if the driver is not wearing a proper helmet. Limb injuries are also common. Much like any other vehicle accidents, bicycle accidents can easily come out of lapse of attention and careless maneuvers.  It is important to always observe proper driving and consideration for other vehicles considering all these risks in mind.

While bicycles are a much-depended means of transportation, drivers should consider factors such as speed, number of other vehicles on the road, the road conditions and weather to ensure their safety while out and about. Be especially cautious when driving at night, as with any other vehicle. It would also help to be aware of any fixed objects in the area to avoid crashing into them. Any mistakes in judgement can lead to accidents, injuries and damage not only to your person, but on other people as well.
