45 arrested, 21 officers injured in tense Seattle protests

SEATTLE, WA – Protests on Capitol Hill in solidarity with those in Portland grew tense last night, resulting in the arrest of over 40 civilians and the injury of 21 police officers.

According to KOMO News, the protests, which began at 1 p.m. at Seattle Central College, were mostly peaceful. It was not until later in the day, near East Pine Street and 11^th Avenue, that a small group of people among the demonstrators began throwing rocks and explosives at police.

According to a representative from the police department, 21 officers were hurt in the demonstrations. At least two officers received medical treatment before returning to work, and an additional officer was taken to the hospital for the treatment of leg injuries.

45 people have been taken into custody for multiple charges, including failure to disperse, obstruction, and assault of a police officer.

Multiple buildings and businesses, including a building of the King County court, were damaged in the protests, which police are labeling a riot due to the property damage that was caused.

Police say they used less-lethal methods, including pepper spray but reportedly not tear gas, to clear the protests.
