Tacoma, Washington  (June 6, 2019) – A mother and daughter were uninjured despite experiencing an accident where a loose tire crashed into the windshield of a pickup truck they were driving in. The incident happened at southbound Interstate 5 near 56th Street on Thursday morning, which was also National Secure Your Load Day. There were also other vehicles struck by the same loose tire, but there were no reports of injuries or other crashes.

The occupants of the truck, Julie Copp and her daughter Kelly Copp, reported that the tire bouncing down the road straight at their vehicle. Fortunately, Kelly, who was driving the truck, was able to safely bring their vehicle to a stop after the tire smashed into their windshield. As the tire had struck some vehicles ahead of them, the two were unable to tell where the tire came from. So far there have been no witnesses and no one has identified the tire, but state highway worker has said that the tire might have come from a trailer.

About Vehicle Accidents

It is fortunate no one was injured in this particular incident. Windshields are important to the structure of the car itself, and any damage done to them should not be overlooked. Windshields provide structural integrity to the rest of the car, and also provides the backing for air bags as they deploy.   While these particular parts of the car are manufactured to withstand impact, they can still be damaged. Strong impact, such as in this case, is one common cause. Take note that a windshield which has cracked will be more susceptible to shattering entirely, so owners are advised to repair or replace broken windshields as soon as damage is done.

Any damage done to a windshield will compromise their safety features. For example, in case of an accident a broken windshield won’t be able to keep the roof from caving in. The shattered glass from a broken windshield can also inflict dangerous injuries. Lastly, in addition to seat belts windshields also help prevent occupants from being ejected from a car in case of a crash. With these reminders in mind, we ask people to never underestimate the dangers of a broken windshield.
