Seattle, Washington (May 13, 2019) – Two people sustained serious injuries after a two-car collision in the area of Southwest Horton Street & 59th Avenue Southwest on Monday Morning. One was listed in critical condition and the other was in a stable condition. Both were taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. Aside from the two victims, two workers also sustained minor injuries after they were struck by the loose wires of the utility pole struck by the cars.

According to preliminary investigation, both vehicles involved were driving north on 59th Avenue Southwest when the drive of the causing SUV suffered a medical emergency. This SUV then slammed into the rear end of the other vehicle, causing both vehicles to fall down an embankment and onto a side street. Along the way, a utility pole and some electrical lines were also knocked over, causing minor injuries to members of a road crew. Both victims came from the causing car. The driver of the other car briefly lost consciousness in the crash, but was uninjured and remained on the scene of the crash. The response team arrived around 9:30 a.m. The accident caused the roads in the area to be blocked, but they have been reopened since then

About Vehicle Accidents

In 2017, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)  have reported a total of 120, 993 car accidents. Of those accidents, 525 were fatal and 34, 311 were possible or suspected of injuries. Car accidents have a variety of causes ranging from driver error to road conditions, and it also includes chronic medical conditions. Chronic medical conditions include epilepsy, diabetes, alcoholism and heart diseases. While alcohol ingestion is related to many cases of car accidents, the other named conditions contribute to a fairly small amount of car accidents, estimated to be around five to ten percent in an early study. Liability in such cases are tricky to negotiate, especially as some drivers would not know about such conditions before the accident. In any case, all drivers should make sure they are in good health and not impeded by any health condition that can affect judgement so as to be safe in the streets.

This particular accident is a case of rear-end collision, also said to be the most common type of car accident. Like many other vehicle accidents, rear-end collisions often happen because of lapse of attention, usually when one vehicle follows another too closely. Injuries associated with rear-end collisions are neck injuries, particularly whiplash as the impact usually jerks the upper body forward. Wrist fractures are also said to be a common side-effect as victims instinctively use their arms and hands to brace their impact, causing the force of the crash to be directed at the wrist. Other serious injuries include broken bones, head and spinal injuries.

We urge all drivers to be careful while behind the wheel. When in a location where hazards such as poor illumination, rough roads or construction materials are present, be especially cautious. By doing this, we can ensure our safety as well as the safety of others in the nearby area.
