SOUTH KING COUNTY, Wa — A woman sustained serious injuries after a box truck struck her car along Interstate 5 in South King County this Thursday morning, according to KOMO News.

Upon receiving calls about the collision, troopers and firefighters arrived around 6 a.m. on the scene a little south of State Route 516 interchange to find the wrecked car and damaged box truck. The woman was immediately taken to the hospital upon discovery of her severe injuries.

Authorities have learned that the woman’s car was stopped on the shoulder at the time of the crash. Trooper Rick Johnson with the State Patrol said that while the truck driver was unimpaired, there is reason to believe he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

State transportation officials said that the scene caused two right lanes to be blocked off and has backed up traffic along the Pierce County line.
