PIERCE COUNTY, WA — A 54-year-old woman was fatally injured Saturday afternoon when a vehicle she was in collided with a tree off State Route 512 in Puyallup, reports The News Tribune.

Washington State Patrol said the wreck occurred on the eastbound lanes of the freeway near Canyon Road East at approximately 12:30 p.m.

An investigation shows a 48-year-old Bonney Lake woman was behind the wheel of a 2005 Nissan Altima when the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tree.

The victim, a resident of Graham, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.

WSP troopers said the Bonney Lake woman displayed signs of impairment and now faces a vehicular homicide charge for her role in the fatal accident.

Authorities closed a section of the road for five hours during an investigation.
