SEATTLE, WA – Two women were critically injured this morning when a Seattle man drove onto a closed highway through a crowd of protesters, according to NBC News.

According to the report, the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., when the 27-year-old driver of a white car struck and injured a 24-year-old woman from Seattle and a 32-year-old woman from Bellingham who were both among a group of racial justice protesters that had gathered on Interstate 5 around 12:15 a.m.

The Seattle woman’s injuries are considered critical. The woman from Bellingham was sent to the hospital for the treatment of serious injuries but is now in stable condition.

Authorities had closed off the highway due to the demonstrations and are currently investigating how the driver gained access to the roadway. According to officials, the incident may or may not have been an attack targeted at demonstrators.

The driver is not believed to have been under the influence at the time of the accident. He is under police custody at this time and will face multiple felony charges.
