SNOHOMISH COUNTY, WA — Two people died early Thursday afternoon after their SUV collided head-on with a dump truck on U.S. Highway 2 near Monroe, reports KOMO News.

Washington State Patrol said the fatal crash happened at Sofie Road shortly before 1:00 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates an SUV was traveling westbound on the highway when it drifted past the center line and struck the truck head-on.

Troopers confirmed two occupants in the SUV were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

The event caused a section of the highway to close for multiple hours between Fern Bluff in Sultan and Old Owen in Monroe.

An investigation into the accident was underway.
