Two injured after Tacoma PD officer drives into crowd of pedestrians
Request Free ConsultationTACOMA, WA – Two people were injured after a Tacoma Police Department officer drove through a crowd of pedestrians last night.
According to KIRO 7 and the Tacoma Police Department, the crash occurred at about 6:20 p.m., near the intersection at Pacific Avenue and South 9th Street in downtown Tacoma, near an alleged street racing scene that had gathered about 100 people together.
Tacoma Police say that the officer was surrounded by pedestrians who were banging on his vehicle. The police officer, a 58-year-old man, is said to have feared for his safety when he drove into the crowd, striking at least two people.
According to witnesses, others were hit by his police SUV as well.
A press release from the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, which is conducting an outside investigation of the deadly-force incident, states that two people were taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries. One of the victims has since been released from treatment.
The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
The officer, who has been with the Tacoma PD for just under 30 years, has since been placed on paid administrative leave.
