Student steals plane from Jefferson County Airport, crashes it

PORT TOWNSEND, WA – A U.S. Navy helicopter located a crashed plane near La Push that was determined to be the plane stolen from Jefferson County Airport Tuesday night.

According to KOMO News, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a suspicious person trying to rent a plane on Tuesday night. Later, they received reports from an individual whose plane had been stolen. According to a GPS tunit on the plane, it was flying above Olympic National Park at the time.

At around 10:30 p.m. that night, a witness reported seeing a plane crash near La Push, but authorities could not locate any wreckage. The next morning, the U.S. Navy helicopter spotted the crashed plane and located its pilot, who was seriously injured. A helicopter transported the pilot to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

No more information is known about the suspect at this time other than he was flying with a student’s pilot license.
