Seattle, Washington (March 24, 2019) – The Seattle Fire Department is investigating a series of eight fires around the SoDo community, which has damaged a dumpster, garbage bin, construction materials, pickup truck and two forklifts. Additionally, combustibles next to buildings were also burned in two of the fires. No injuries or other significant property loss has been reported. The fires were set in the evening of March 24 and the morning of March 25.
Investigators believe the fires were intentionally set, and are currently reaching out for information. The Seattle Fire Department has also created an interactive map of the fire locations for further details.
The Seattle Fire Department has issued a few reminders for fire safety and arson prevention in the aftermath of this incident. Most if not all the steps involve securing the area of one’s business or residence. It is also important to make sure that possible combustible materials are discarded properly or at the very least kept away from buildings. They also urge owners of buildings to review fire safety and make sure that an escape plan is formulated in case of fire.
Fires in industrial areas often happen because of lack of awareness on fire risks. The nature of work present in industrial areas, coupled with the presence of varied equipment and machinery, which all run on electricity, make fire safety all the more important in workplaces. Specifically, five major causes stand out in causing industrial fires: combustible dust, hot work (such as welding, soldering, metalwork), flammable liquids and/or gases, equipment and machinery, and lastly, electrical hazards. In identifying these causes for fires, one can then properly assess if these are risks in one’s own industrial workplace and undertake preventive measurements. Following safety regulations can ensure that one does not have to face the property loss and damage, and more importantly, injuries and death.
