Mason County, Washington – One Dead and One Injured in Collision

Mason County, Washington (April 17, 2019) – One person died and another was injured after a head-on collision involving two cars on State Route 3 at milepost 3.5 near Shelton. The victim, an 82 year-old woman, died from her injuries while she was being taken by medics to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The driver who caused the incident also suffered injuries and was taken to Mason General Hospital in the vicinity.

According to law enforcement, one car was southbound on the SR 3 when it crossed over into the northbound lane and struck the car in which the elderly woman was driving.  The Washington State Patrol has not stated whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident, but said charges were pending. The accident blocked both lanes of the highway, causing traffic to be diverted to East Johns Prairie Road and North Pine/South Front Street. The road was reopened a few hours later.

Of the types of car accidents, head-on collisions are considered the most dangerous due to the circumstances – two cars are heading towards each other, with a great amount of force being experienced by all parties when the impact happens. While only 2% of car accidents are head-on collisions, they account for more than 10% of car-accident related injuries. These injuries are quite dangerous as most of them are head, spine or neck-related, including spinal injuries, brain injuries, paralysis, broken bones, and whiplash.  Head-on collisions are also often fatal, and overall has a very high death rate compared to other types of collisions involving vehicles. Our sympathies to all those who have suffered in these vehicle accidents.

The best way to protect one’s self from a dangerous vehicle accident is to take steps to prevent it. We urge everyone to practice proper driving and to always be cautious while on the road. Be especially careful on late hours, especially if the road is lacking sufficient illumination. Any mistake can lead to injuries and damage not only to your person, but on other people as well.
