PUYALLUP, WA – A young couple managed to escape a dramatic, car-splitting accident in Puyallup this afternoon with only minor injuries, according to KOMO News.

The crash happened in the 6400 block of Canyon Road East at about 12:30 p.m. when a silver Honda Civic, operated by a 21-year-old man, collided with a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to split in half before falling over 100 ft down the side of a ravine.

The driver, who reportedly had been speeding when the accident occurred, and his 18-year-old female passenger were able to crawl out of the wreckage with only minor injuries.

A cat that had been traveling with the couple unfortunately escaped the car during the accident. It was not immediately located, despite the efforts of emergency staff to locate the pet.

Authorities closed Canyon Rd for about three hours for the cleanup and investigation efforts.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
