INDEX, WA — A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday evening after a loose rock fell on him at a well-known rock-climbing area northeast of Seattle, according to KOMO News.

The accident happened at the lower area of the Index Town Walls near the Skykomish River shortly after 5:00 p.m.

Chief Eric Andrews with Snohomish County Fire District 26 said a climber in the area kicked a rock that came loose from the wall and fell, striking the boy below.

The boy was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He remained in critical condition as of Monday morning.
