Tacoma, Washington (April 26, 2019)  – A speeding driver being chased by police was eventually stopped when a PIT (Pursuit Intervention) maneuver from police got the car to crash into a pole at the State Route 509 at Taylor Way East. The vehicle also briefly rolled over and caught on fire at the site, and police had to resort to using bean bag guns to break the windows to be able to get into the vehicle. The driver was taken to Tacoma General Hospital, and after his release he will be booked into Pierce County Jail.

The chase began around 1 a.m. on the northbound Interstate 5 near Mount Roads in DuPont, when a trooper saw the vehicle being driven erratically. It was learned that the driver had a warrant out for his arrest. The chase was briefly terminated at Berkeley Avenue Southwest, but later continued as the driver headed into Tacoma. The errant driver’s vehicle was successfully spiked on South 56th Street, but even this failed to stop the driver. The driver continued at speeds of 75-80 mph on the SR 509 until troopers used the successful PIT maneuver. The injuries of the driver has not been detailed in the report.

About Vehicle Accidents

While the situation is an accident brought on by a chase, people should still note that car accidents are common and may happen more frequently than you think. In 2017, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)  have reported a total of 120, 993 car accidents. Of those accidents, 525 were fatal ad 34, 311 were possible or suspected of injuries. This type of accident where the vehicle has landed on the side or top can be classified under rollover accident, a hazardous situation in which victims may get trapped inside the car. Sometimes, outside help is needed to safely get trapped occupants out of the car. This type of accident usually happens after trying to turn on high speeds. Cars that are more susceptible to rollover accidents are lighter cars with a high gravity center, though it should be noted any car can roll over given the circumstance. In a rollover crash, injuries that can be expected are broken wrists, whiplash among other neck-related injuries, as well as head and spinal injuries.

As always, we urge all drivers to practice caution while out on the streets. As was the situation in this accident, be especially careful on late hours, especially if the road is lacking sufficient illumination. It would also help to identify busy roads ad try to avoid being in their proximity to minimize any risk of a vehicle accident. Any mistake can lead to injuries and damage not only to your person, but on other people as well.
