Mt. Rainier, Washington – One Dead, Two Injured in Rockfall at Liberty Ridge

Mt. Rainier, Washington (May 29, 2019) – One person died and two other injured after a rockfall swept through the campsite of three parties. The first person rescued was listed in serious condition, and was airlifted to Haborview Medical Center in Seattle. Another injured person and the deceased were flown out at 2:30 p.m., and they were transferred to Morton Hospital and Pierce County Medical Examiner respectively. The remaining climbers were flown off around 4:45 p.m.

The call first came in around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, reporting that a rockfall had swept through the camping site of three parties of two climbers. In the rescue twenty-four rangers from Mt. Rainier National Park were involved, as well as a chaplain from Tacoma Pierce County Chaplaincy. The identities of the climbers have not been released.
