SEATTLE, WA – Two people were rescued by passing kayakers Wednesday night after their seaplane crashed into Lake Washington.

According to Seattle PI, the Seattle Fire Department responded to the accident around 9 p.m. Wednesday. They received a call for a crashed seaplane in Lake Washington about 200 feet away from the shore, at the 300 block of Lakeside Avenue South.

The people who were flying the plane stood on top of it as they awaited help.

A man on his sailboat in Lake Washington witnessed the crash and started heading toward it to rescue the people inside, but said two kayakers got there first and pulled the victims out of the plane.

First responders evaluated the victims for injuries and needed to contain the fuel that was spilling from the plane into the lake.

The Seattle PD Harbor Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
