Hoquiam, Washington (March 4, 2020) – A bicyclist was injured after crashing into a car on the intersection of Lincoln Street and Washington Avenue. According to the article from KXRO News Radio, the patient, a 45 year-old man from Hoquiam, was treated by paramedics on the scene and later taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were mentioned in the report.

According to information from the Hoquiam Police Department, there were multiple 911 calls about the incident. Upon the officers’ arrival, they found the patient lying on the pavement and being tended to by the car driver and other motorists. According to the driver of the vehicle, he was on Washington Avenue slowly heading towards Lincoln Street when the bicycle appeared from his left and struck the front of his car. Officers determined that the bicyclist had not been using a required headlight and rear red light and was also not wearing a bike helmet when the crash occurred.

About Vehicle Accidents

Many of the things that apply to motorcycle accidents can also apply to bicycle accidents. Because a bicycle’s overall visibility is less than most other vehicles, drivers of other vehicles tend not to see cyclists in time.  This visibility problem makes bicycle rides at night especially risky. Unfortunately, because of a bicycle’s open nature, the risks of injuries are greater to a person on a bicycle than a person in a car. Injuries to the head are one of the risks, especially if the driver is not wearing a proper helmet. Limb injuries are also common. Much like any other vehicle accidents, bicycle accidents can easily come out of lapse of attention and careless maneuvers.  It is important to always observe proper driving and consideration for other vehicles considering all these risks in mind.

While bicycles are a much-depended means of transportation, drivers should consider factors such as speed, number of other vehicles on the road, the road conditions and weather to ensure their safety while out and about. Be especially cautious when driving at night, as with any other vehicle. It would also help to be aware of any fixed objects in the area to avoid crashing into them. Any mistakes in judgement can lead to accidents, injuries and damage not only to your person, but on other people as well.
